ICO takes action against Google

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) have written to the world's leading search engine Google to advise them their recent Google Street View project significantly breached the Data Protection Act.

Since April 2010, The ICO have had the power to impose fines of up to £500,000 on organisations who breach the Data Protection Act. Within this legislation includes specific reference to the encryption of data.

"Organisations can minimise the risks of security breaches involving personal information by ensuring that all portable media devices containing personal information are encrypted. Staff must be adequately trained and organisations should give proper consideration to restricting staff from downloading large volumes of data onto memory sticks and other portable devices. All personal information held within buildings and offices should be protected by adequate security arrangements to prevent theft or the loss of the data."

The full legislation is available on the ICO website.

Google's breach is so far the highest profile case and has resulted in Christopher Graham, who is appointed as Information Commissioner by HM The Queen writing directly to Google, who will now have to sign an indemnity to appear on the ICO's website as well as be subject to a full ICO audit. Christopher Graham said, "It is my view that the collection of this information was not fair or lawful and constitutes a significant breach of the first principle of the Data Protection Act."

"The most appropriate and proportionate regulatory action in these circumstances is to get written legal assurance from Google that this will not happen again - and to follow this up with an ICO audit."

Mark Treweeke's Top Five Tips for Cloud Services and Networking

Mark Treweeke, Redstor's Product Manager gives us his top 5 tips for those looking for an insight into how to overcome network challenges that may be encountered when considering Online Cloud Backup and Cloud Storage Services.

1. The first backup or upload of data to the cloud is likely to take a long time, typically due to large data quantities needed to be shifted over low bandwidth connections. This can be alleviated by using an online backup or cloud storage provider who has a ‘seeding’ option where they ship you a storage device to collect the data before it is shipped back to the service provider and uploaded to the cloud platform.

2. Make sure that the technology that you are using to backup or move data into the cloud is designed for that purpose and has been designed to minimise data transfer over the network through data reduction technologies like compression, block or binary level incremental backups or client-side data de-duplication technology which eliminates blocks of data already stored in the cloud, all of which greatly reduces the amount of data that needs to be transported over the network. This type of enabling technology will allow only unique data to be sent after the initial seed backup has been performed.

3. The daily change rate should be something that's appropriate for online backups or cloud storage. If you're creating many tens or hundreds of gigabytes of unique data per day, and you need to back up that data or move it into the cloud every day, you may require greater bandwidth in order for the process to complete in a timely fashion. You’ll have to consider the cost of the additional network bandwidth required.

4. Security over public networks should be of concern, make sure that the enabling software encrypts the data before it is sent over the network and offers ‘end-to-end’ encryption.

5. Networks today are more reliable than ever but enabling technology should still include a strong re-connection mechanism. You don’t want your backup or data transfer to fail and have to re-start all over again because a connection to the internet or service provider was lost, even if it was momentarily. This is especially true for laptop backup, where they regularly lose their connection or move between networks or access points due to the portability of the device, power saving and hibernation options.

Redstor's cloud services include our ever-growing Online Backup service which currently protects upwards of 500TB of data and Redstor Protector, our Laptop Encryption and Backup service. If you require any further information around Cloud services and how these can help you adapt your business please call our office on 0118 9515 200.

BBC Staff Lose Mobile Devices

BBC staff have lost £241,019 worth of laptops and mobiles over the past two years, a Freedom of Information request has revealed - http://www.itproportal.com/portal/news/article/2010/8/9/bbc-staff-lose-gadgets-worth-240000/

According to BBC News, a total of 65 mobile phones, 17 BlackBerry smartphones and 146laptops devices have been reported lost or stolen by BBC employees over the two year period.

The information released by the organisation included data from every BBC subsidiary.

The data revealed that the value of stolen or lost laptops amounted to £219,000 while mobile phones and BlackBerry devices were valued at £12,913 and £9,106.

The BBC has revealed that, out of the stolen or lost items, around 19 items worth £23,450 were recovered, reducing the losses to £217,569.

With Redstor Protector, the BBC could have avoided this embarassing situation and protected potentially sensitive data held on those devices. For only a few pence per day, per PC or laptop, Redstor Protector offers complete portable device protection and helps protect against a data breach/loss:

Sensitive data security - a cavalier attitude?

The exponential increase in the mobility of sensitive data through rising laptop purchases, USB and other storage devices means that data loss prevention is now very much towards the top of the ‘to-do list’ for most information security professionals. Many organisations still run the risk of having sensitive data exposed following loss or theft of laptops and portable devices. Evidence of this is the continued publication of breach/loss notices leading to loss of brand value and company reputation and bringing about the possibility of fines.

Statistics show that hundreds of thousands of laptops are stolen in the UK each year with many more lost or misplaced. Hotspots such as Heathrow airport see as many as 900 laptops reported stolen each week (source: Silicon.com). Only last week it was announced that Ministry of Defence staff lost or had stolen 340 laptops in the last two years and over 1,000 in the last 6 years (source: heraldscotland.com). Only one in five of the devices that disappeared over the last two years was encrypted, leading security experts to criticise the "cavalier attitude" to the protection of data.

The impact of stolen or missing laptops is no longer merely the capital loss and the inconvenience to the user, the value of any laptop is the information stored on it and this is often many times greater than the value of the laptop itself. It is estimated that up to 60% of business information is now stored on laptops and portable devices and if this data is not backed up it can be difficult, if not impossible to replace. If the data is not encrypted, it can get into the wrong hands and be publically exposed following loss of theft.

Can your organisation afford the risk? These risks can be mitigated by Redstor Protector. For only a few pence per day, per PC or laptop, Redstor Protector offers complete portable device protection and helps protect against a data breach/loss:
Encryption – to secure portable devices and to protect sensitive information from unauthorised access
Backup and Recovery – to recover sensitive data when it is damaged, lost or stolen

Port Access Control – to help prevent unauthorised data leaving portable devices
Device Trace – to help prevent portable device theft and help Police locate devices if they come back online

Redstor launch new data encryption service for organisations!

Redstor, a leading managed services and IT solutions Provider, has announced the launch of its new storage management and security service - Redstor Protector. This unique ‘cloud’ service secures and protects confidential and sensitive information held on PC’s and laptops in the event of data loss or theft.

By combining policy-driven PC backup, at rest encryption, remote data deletion, port access control and device trace into a single product suite, Redstor Protector allows businesses and Public Bodies to secure, backup, delete and recover their data easily, anytime and from anywhere.

IDC estimates that at least 60% of important company data is stored on laptops and desktops with little or no protection, with less than 8% of users backing up their data on a daily basis. Redstor Protector gives organisations greater management and control of their data through a simple policy driven console and is the most comprehensive way to protect and recover PC and laptop data, at a cost effective price, the equivalent to just a few pence per day per device.

Stories of data loss or theft are becoming frequent features in the news, and businesses need to act now to protect their data. If an incident occurs where data is lost or stolen, Redstor Protector has a unique shredding function that can remotely delete data even if their device is offline, businesses can then rest assured that there is a recent backup of any files that were deleted stored offsite in a secure data centre.

Other key features that Redstor Protector offers include automated record keeping, and state of the art Award Winning encryption software, leaving data secured with 256-bit AES encryption by using randomly generated keys for maximum security and privacy. This software complies with the current laws and legislation for data protection, as well as Becta guidelines; making this product extremely popular with the Education Sector, through which Redstor provide services to over 75 LEA’s and 12,000 schools.

Protector represents a unique service proposition for IT service providers to offer their customers based around Redstor’s ‘cloud’ experience, technology infrastructure and marketing.
